Our Story

How Ember Quorum Came to Be

Ember Quorum was founded in 2014 by a small group of marketing practitioners who had spent their earlier careers inside large agencies and corporate marketing departments. What they noticed, consistently, was that the most consequential decisions — about how a business described itself, what it chose to emphasise, and what it quietly let go of — were often made in a hurry, with incomplete thinking, or under pressure from stakeholders who were solving the wrong problem.

The practice began quietly, with a focus on brand positioning for mid-sized Malaysian businesses navigating moments of change: a new ownership structure, a pivot in audience, a category that had shifted around them. Over time, the scope broadened to include marketing reviews and focused campaign thinking sessions for clients who needed a trusted outside perspective more than they needed another agency relationship.

Today, Ember Quorum works with businesses across Malaysia and occasionally beyond, always in an advisory capacity, always in writing as well as conversation, and always with the same underlying conviction: that good marketing thinking should feel like a relief, not a complication.

Nadia Sulaiman

Founding Principal

A former brand strategist who spent fifteen years with consumer and professional services businesses across Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Nadia leads all Brand Positioning Review engagements and guides the overall direction of the practice.

Reza Azman

Senior Consultant

Reza brings a background in marketing operations and digital channel management. He leads Marketing Approach Reviews and has a particular interest in how businesses allocate attention across their marketing mix.

LT

Li-Shan Tan

Strategy Consultant

Li-Shan works primarily on Campaign Thinking Sessions and supports positioning work for clients in the technology and professional services sectors. She holds a master's in communications from the University of Malaya.

Standards We Hold Ourselves To

Client Confidentiality

All engagements are covered by a mutual confidentiality agreement. We do not discuss client situations with other clients, and we do not use client work as case material without written permission.

Written Scope Before Work Begins

We produce a written scope document before any engagement begins, so both sides understand clearly what is included, what the deliverables are, and when they will be provided.

Direct Senior Contact

Clients deal with the same consultant throughout an engagement. Work is not passed down to junior staff once the engagement has been agreed.

Delivery on Agreed Timelines

We take timeline commitments seriously. If circumstances change on our end, we communicate early and directly — we do not miss deadlines quietly.

Data Protection Compliance

We handle all client data in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and maintain appropriate security measures for any information shared with us.

No Conflicts of Interest

We disclose any prior relationship with competitors in your category before an engagement begins, and we decline work where a genuine conflict of interest exists.


Our Context

Marketing Strategy Consulting in Malaysia

Ember Quorum operates in a consulting landscape that has, over the past decade, become increasingly populated with practitioners offering broad digital marketing services alongside strategy advice. We occupy a more specific position: strategy consulting only, delivered in writing as well as conversation, with no interest in executing campaigns, managing media, or running social accounts on a client's behalf.

The Malaysian market presents particular strategic challenges for mid-sized businesses — among them, a multilingual consumer landscape, a concentrated urban centre in the Klang Valley surrounded by distinct regional markets, and a professional services sector that has grown considerably more competitive since 2018. We have worked across these conditions long enough to understand them well.

Our clients tend to be businesses with MYR 10 million to MYR 200 million in annual revenue, a marketing function of some kind already in place, and a strategic question they have not yet found a satisfying answer to. They come to us because they want thinking, not services — and because they value an outside perspective that is not trying to sell them an ongoing retainer.
